Banning McDonald’s Food

Prince Charles indicated that by banning food from McDonald’s the nation would be healthier and have better eating habits. This is an unrealistic solution because not only does it not solve the problem of people eating unhealthy food, it interferes with the idea of free enterprise and individual rights. It is true that the percentage of obese people is increasing and there is a significant need to encourage exercise and healthy eating habits, but it should be a choice rather than mandatory. By simply banning food from McDonalds does not mean that people will not cook hamburgers and French fries at home. Keeping people from being able to get fast food will not force them to eat better food. By banning food from one restaurant it takes away the owner and founder’s rights to earn a living. Although McDonald’s does have some unhealthy choices that can lead to obesity, it has added a number of choices such as fruits and salads to provide healthier choices for people who are conscious of their diets. It is important for the government and medical professionals to show concern about the increasing obese population due to the health problems that obesity can cause, but each person should have the right to make their own choice. It takes away people’s rights if they are forced to eat healthy. People should be encouraged to develop more healthy habits, but banning McDonalds is not the way to do it. McDonalds should have the right to sell food and people should have the right to eat it. Word count 262 Women and Stress According to statistics, women are more likely to suffer from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder especially those in the military. There are several possible reasons for this including women have historically taken a more emotional or sentimental view of the world than men, women in the military sometimes suffer harassment from the men they serve with, and women who have left children behind are more likely to have feelings of quilt at the beginning of their tours of duty. Many studies in the past have shown that women react to situations with more emotion than men. This would probably be true in situations where they see people dying daily and even have to kill some of them personally. Even though times have changed and there are laws against workplace harassment, women in the military are still sometimes not treated as equals by the men they work with. This could lead to feelings of failure and depression that women could bring home with them. Women in the military sometimes have to leave their children behind, which causes them to worry not only about their children, but also about not being able to see them again. Men and women are both capable of suffering from stress, but because women take things to heart and personalize them more, they have a harder time forgetting them when they come back home. Word count 226 Save Iraq or Save Ourselves? It is important to help the country’s neighbors, but there comes a time when that help becomes more of a problem than a help. The United States has enough problems of its own with school shootings, mall shootings and all kinds of other violence maybe it is time to focus on controlling the violence at home, before it is necessary to have someone come from other countries to provide help here. By having more military presence in the country people would not be as likely to act violently, people would be more willing to support the military, and people would feel safer. Having the threat of the military being present to enforce laws and rules, would help keep people from resorting to crime. It compares to how children act up more when the parents are not around to punish them. People are getting tired of supporting the military, because they no longer feel the military is working to defend the United States. Because of this, people are not as supportive as they once were. With the constant threat of terrorism present, people no longer feel safe with most of the military forces half a world away. The country here needs the military to protect it in order to make its citizens feel safe. It pays to help other, but the welcome has been overstayed and it is time to bring the people home to take care of the country’s own people. Word count 241 The Overweight Boy It is not a good thing that parents would allow a child to get to the point of being four times over his ideal weight, but taking the child away from his parents would not necessarily be the best thing for the child. The parents need education on healthy eating habits for a child, parent’s need to be monitored to make sure that they get the boy into an exercise program and the child needs to be put on a diet. It is not entirely the parents who caused the child to be overweight, but it is up to them to help him lose it. There are many programs that teach parenting education. Many of these programs teach nutrition classes. The parents and child could take classes together on healthy cooking, eating and snacks. The parents need to put the child in an exercise program and monitor it. They should work out with the child if he is not self motivated to participate. There are a number of active games that can be used as an exercise program and provide entertainment as well. The child needs to have a diet plan developed for him and he needs to be monitored to make sure he stays on it. His parents could encourage him by eating the same foods he does. Although it is a problem when parents let children get morbidly obese, there are much worse things parents could allow children to do. These parents need to help their child become healthier and lose weight. Word count 254 Lincoln Quote Abraham Lincoln’s quote indicated that rather than spending his time worrying about the past, he was more worried about his own future. This means that people should look forward instead of backwards. This concept encourages people to not worry about what their parents accomplished or did not, it tells them to worry about doing their best in the present and to set goals for their futures. People spend a lot of time worrying about where they came from or what kind of home they grew up in. They live in the shadow of their parents or are expected to do well because of them. Instead people need to worry about doing their best in the areas they are interested in and to not worry about what anyone else has done. In order to be an individual, the person needs to pursue his own interests instead of what is expected of him. In order to be successful, the person needs to plan out what they like and what they want to do. Each person needs to find out what they like to do and what they are good at then develop a plan to pursue those goals. Every person is an individual and needs to focus on that fact. No one should try to be someone else or worry about living up to someone else’s reputation. Word count 225 Kennedy Quote The point of the saying about not negotiating out of fear is based on the same reason that the United States says it does not negotiate with terrorists. Negotiating out of fear gives the other person the control, negotiating to create fear in the other party makes them feel inferior, but negotiating for equal benefits is profitable and helpful. If a person has kidnapped a child and the parent gives the kidnappers anything they want, the kidnappers will either keep asking for more or will kill the child, because they no longer need him. By giving into the unfair negotiations out of fear, the other party has all of the control and the situation will not end well. If the situation is reversed and the other party has no power in the negotiation, an unfair advantage is gained and the solution will not end well. It makes the other person feel inferior and they agree out of fear. When, however the negotiation is over something that will benefit both parties the situation ends well. If a person is selling a house it is okay for the buyer to make an offer in attempt to get a more acceptable price. In the end the seller gets the house sold and the buyer gets the house at a better price. Negotiation is good when the end result is beneficial to both sides, if one side has an unfair advantage though it is not good for someone and will lead to a worse situation in the end. Word Count 254 Parent Provided Transportation Dear School Board: It is a great idea for parents to provide transportation for their children because the children are ultimately their responsibility anyway. It solves a number of problems for the school district, which is needed at the current time. By having parents provide the transportation for the children, the school district saves money, there is no discipline problem on the bus, and the district is not responsible for the safety of the children on the road. The school district would save money through this proposal by spending less money for gas and maintenance on the busses. No longer paying the salaries for bus drivers except for the occasional school field trip, would also save the district money. When the children are with their parents, there is no problem with children who misbehave on the bus. There would no longer be a problem with bus drivers who had to deal with children fighting or running around on the bus instead of sitting down during the ride home. With parents being responsible for transporting the children, the school district would not have to take responsibility of children’s safety on the roads. During bad weather or in case of accidents the responsibility would be with the parents and not the school. It would be cost effective and practical for the school district to have parents transport children. The buses are very costly and impractical. Word count 230 The Perfect Gift The perfect gift I could receive is success. This does not mean that I want to be a millionaire or famous. It means knowing that I have done the best I can to reach my goals and have accomplished what I set out to do. In order to do this, I need to choose a goal, work towards the goal, and accomplish the goal. The first step in being successful is to decide what I want to accomplish. Without a goal to work towards, a person can not be successful. I need to know what I like and want. Once I have decided on a goal, I need to begin working towards reaching that goal. I need to have the drive and ambition to work towards whatever goal I have set for myself. When I have decided on a goal and developed a plan for achieving the goal, I need to focus on achieving the goal. By following the plan, I can achieve my goals and be successful. Being successful is the best possible gift anyone can receive, but it is not a gift someone can give to someone else. It is something that everyone must accomplish individually. I would like for someone to hand success to me, but I know I would appreciate it more by reaching goals on my own. Word Count 222 Memorable Event It was the concert of a lifetime. I had waited to see this group for years, but they had not come to our town, until this summer. I bought the tickets the first day they went on sale. My best friend and I planned for months what we would do before the concert to get ready for it, we had a great time at the concert, and I will remember it forever. After we bought the tickets, we planned an entire day around the concert. We had events leading up to the concert to help us get ready for the concert. It was important to listen to the right kind of music all day in order to be in the right mood for the concert. During the concert we were in a huge crowd right in front of the stage and we somehow managed to meet the members of the band after the concert. I had the greatest time of my life at the concert. I saved my ticket stub to remember how much fun I had meeting my favorite band. I knew that the next time I heard them on the radio I would be able to remember the concert. It is nice to be able to have positive experiences to be able to remember in the future. When I am an adult and have to spend my days at a job, I can remember the fun times I had when I was young. Word Count 245 Bragging I have never been good at saying good things about myself. I can find positive things to say about other people, but it is easier to be hard on myself. I know there are positive things about everyone and I have my good traits too. I just never think about them. When I have to think about them, I would say that my best qualities are my ability to relate to people, my intelligence and my personality. I am a people person and like to make friends. I am good at getting people to talk to me about things and getting them to like me. I am easy to get along with and enjoy being around different people. I am a smart person who likes to do well. I do not always live up to my potential, but I know I am very intelligent. I need to show this more. I think I have a great personality. I love to have fun and want the people around me to have fun too. I like spending time with my friends and bring out the best in them. I am a person who laughs a lot. Although it is not easy to brag on myself, I think I am a great person and like to be around other people. I thing other people like being around me as well. I want other people to know that I am a fun person to be around. Word Count 242

Analysis of Memories of an Immigrant

Today, during our broadcasting, we will talk about immigration, particularly the huge immigration’s period, from the end of the 19th century to the beginning of the 20th century, to the USA: nearly 12 million immigrants, coming from all parts of the world, arrived in the United States between 1870 and 1900. To discuss of this subject with us, the famous author of â€Å"Memories of an immigrant†, Mary Wilde, will present her book. Good morning, as you know, immigration is an important subject in the world today. But, what did you decide to write a book about it, and what did you choose this time in particular. â€Å"Memories of an immigrant† is a biography of my grand-mother Annie McBride, an Irish immigrant. Social and cultural differences of immigrants have built north-American culture. In your book, why did your grand-parent decide to immigrate to the USA? Annie was born in 1880 in Ireland. She emigrated in 1901 because she wanted personal freedom or relief from political and religious persecution. Actually, there were political subordination by the British policy and religious prejudice of Protestant Masters to the Catholic Irish. In 1845, the great potato rot killed many of the crops people had planted and a famine resulted, but 50 years after the situation was the same. What were her expectations and dreams? Fleeing crop failure, land and job shortages, and famine, she came to the U. S. because it was perceived as the land of economic opportunityâ€Å"Golden Land â€Å". She decided to settle down in the US to start a new life, in order to have better prospects, so as to earn a better living. She hopped for a better future. Did she go with all her family in the â€Å"Golden land†? Hers parents died when she was young but she was raised by her uncle Bill and his wife: a couple of farmers. In 1895, Bill immigrated to the new country while his wife and Annie would staid in Ireland. After he had worked and earned money for the passage of them, they could have joined him. There is an extract of her journey to the US. Annie McBride said†¦ My journey to Ellis Island: Day 20 I'm in this boat since 20 days. It is so long. I thought the trip gonna be less hard. I am in steerage class; my bed is not comfortable at all. I sleep with six other persons, a French woman and an old German man. The four others, I don't know their name, I didn't understand their language. They are kind people; I ate with them yesterday evening, in the dormitory. My only diner was a lukewarm soup, a boiled potatoes and a stringy beef. The quality is poor, but it was good compared to the piece of bread we had in Ireland. I still have two months to end this trip. During the day, I talk with Julie and Gunter, my bedroom's mates. I learn very much about their country their lives and why did they decide to come to the USA. For me, eating potatoes was a miracle, in Ireland; the potato famine was a disaster and left lot of people destitute. I had the feeling that I was living the beginning of my new life. A life without fears and problems. I am very hopeful and impatient. Yesterday I didn't succeed to sleep, outside, a huge storm was rumbling. I was afraid because I hate storms and I always thought that in the ocean, it could be very dangerous. One hour ago, when I talked with her, Julie told me that the captain wasn't very nice, he committed sexual offences. I think this behavior is inappropriate to a female passenger, and I don't understand why he used this language. There is not drinking water on the boat. Yesterday, I drunk water with and horrible rancid smell and I had an unbearable stomach ache. I staid in my bed all the day, I was so bored. I heard that a typhus disease appeared on the boat. I'm afraid, it's gonna increase my constant pressure, this illness made lot of dead people in Ireland. I will propose to people to play cards with me, stay without do anything is just impossible, I think I will die of boredom. This day will end in four hours and let the place to another long and hard traveling day. I can't wait to arrive to USA. To see this new country, this new people, to live my new life. How was the arrival in the US and at Ellis Island? After four weeks in the boat, she made out the shore through the fog and was very excited. Annie's first view of the United States was at Ellis Island in New York. After leaving the ship all the immigrants had medical and legal inspections. If they were healthy and if they had 25$ they were allowed to leave Ellis Island and start their new lives. After inspections, where did she go? Bill told her the situation was very difficult when he arrived in the USA. In the ship, he met another Irish Sean who proposed to him to go to Philadelphia where there were working opportunities: the country was growing and it needed men to do the heavy work of building bridges, canals, and railroads. Thus, they were engaged to do work of building of railroads and canals, for miserable wages. They were forced to live in cellars because of poverty. Their brogue and dress provoked ridicule; their poverty and illiteracy provoked scorn. Then, Bill and Sean settled in the already existing Irish communities, where Catholic Churches had been built, and cultural traditions were carried out. Consequently, Molly, Bill’s wife, and Annie joined him at Philadelphia. They found work as chamber maid and caretaker of children. The Church played an integral part in their lives. It was a Church who fought not only for their souls but also for their human rights. Often stereotyped and discriminated against, many immigrants suffered verbal and physical abuse because they were â€Å"different. † Their transition into American life, however, was not smooth as the Irish minority came into direct and sometimes violent conflict with the Protestant majority. After 10, Annie had children with Sean, and in 1950, she founded a college, today renowned, in Virginia. Thank you for your presentation and participation, Mary Wilde.

Athletes And Drug Use

Use of athletes and drugs Many people believe that the use of drugs in professional sports is not a serious problem, but it is widespread and more serious than people think. In professional sports, drug use is considered a serious problem, but it is also very individual and discreet. From time to time, people will see sports celebrities being accused of using some illegal drugs, but this is one of the many people who meet by chance. Today's athletes do not seem to use drugs to improve their performance, or in other words to improve ethical issues of cheating. Drugs have become a problem of our society for many years. They are abused and used by many groups including amateur and professional athletes. It is very common to hear and read athletes and drug abuse. Athletes have long history of using drugs, but they are now more common than ever. Today, there are other ways to hide drug abuse, so it is increasing rapidly. The use of drugs in sports is cheating, that is a mistake, and most importantly, it is illegal. Steroids are artificial derivatives of androgen testosterone. To improve performance, anabolic steroid hormones are a drug of choice for today's athlete. Steroids are a series of synthetic compounds. Assimilation shows the ability of steroids to accumulate muscle tissue and stimulate growth. Testosterone began to move when the Russian weightlifter found them in the 1940s and 1950s. Most athletes use assimilating steroids, which means building body tissues. Anabolic steroid hormones are potent medicines, and many people take large quantities to improve exercise performance. Natural androgen of weight, testosterone. (Steroids, 2008) Many athletes think that it is very useful to use steroids. Because it is the only way to develop muscles and build muscle strength. It is not a type of medicine people use to nurture and get rid of reality. The steroid is the name of testosterone, a medicine made with reproductive hormone seen in men. Some athletes frequently u se anabolic steroid hormones because they increase competence and trainers ability and bring high results. Steroids work by reducing fatigue during training and by shortening the time required for athletes to recover from fatigue. - People all over the world complain about professional athletes' salaries everyday. Even though top athletes make millions of dollars annually, most athletes do not earn more money than the average working class citizens. There are many risks in work, the safety of work is very unstable. Fees and taxes also limit the amount earned by athletes. Male and female tax rates participating in professional sports are very high

Edith Stern Attacks the Domestic Bondage of Women and 27-2, Vance Essay

Edith Stern Attacks the Domestic Bondage of Women and 27-2, Vance Packard Analyzes the Age of Affluence - Essay Example They cook, clean and take care of children with no law whatsoever protecting them, unlike how there are labor unions and legislation governing the wage of workers in industries and factories. This fact means that they can go unpaid for the whole time they work at home. They will have no grounds on which they can demand a salary from either their husbands or children.1 Another objection to the house bondage of women is the fact that there is no compensation in case of an accident. Houses are usually dangerous places to work. This hazardous condition comes from the fact that environmental and health workers are not allowed into homes. As such, poor ventilation, electrical wiring, plumbing, and fumigation are not top of class services offered by governments. They are individual works that are sometimes done wrongly. Any accident that occurs in the house from these and more hazards receives no compensation, unlike an accident that occurs in a factory. In plants, accidents led to the monetary compensation of workers and their families. In the American homes after the 1950s, accidents in the house follow the norm that was there during slavery. Every worker looked after themselves, and so do the housewives. The lack of regular rest periods in the housewife’s schedule exhausts her more than the ordinary factory worker. She gets to work for more than fourteen hours a day and rest for less than eight hours. The lack of rest is due to the ever-present activities to accomplish within the regular routine of a home. They have to prepare meals all for the day, clean dishes, and trim flowers and do the laundry work. These activities are repeated each and every day, and are treated as regular routine. She gets lesser resting hours than the men working in factories. This work makes her home more than just a place to rest. It is viewed as a place of bondage and limited freedom, with extreme working conditions and long working hours. The women in the self-implied

Bureaucracy Assignment - Research Paper Example The development of science and technology during the 1950s and 60s called for an increased in education funding which later expanded to education of the poor, minorities, women, the disabled and foreign nationals. What are the significance of African American theater and culture from Essay

What are the significance of African American theater and culture from both a national and global perspective - Essay Example Their storytelling, dance, music and performance was a vital tool to motivate the slaves as they worked on tobacco and sugar cane plantations, mines and salt flats. Eventually as theater developed from the African ancestry of Greek tragedy of Shakespearean epics, American stages have created a broad series of plays, mostly prejudiced by the diverse population inhabiting this nation (Hill, 2004). Impacts realized through theatre performance in themes of African American plays The free southern theatre’s production of a play, by the name slave ship, reviewed the history of African American in the United States and deliberately dived audience along racial lines, (Baraka 1968) a symbolic slave ship was created in the center of the large playing area, with close seating, on all sides. The grasp of the ship, where slave bodies were piled in overcrowded quarters, was eye point with the audience portraying the merciless situation on board. During a created slave auction, female slaves were undressed topless and pushed at American men in the audience, who were inquired what they considered the women were valued. Many white audience members were so distressed by this violent argument with history that they created at early days; others hoped they had a chance to experience. At the end of the play, actors, involved black power actions, bringing on board the black audience members to join them in surrounding the white audience, while shouting for aggressive rebellion. At many performances, black audience members, felt empowered and motivated by the presentation, they joined the actors in shouting and frightening white spectators. Many white members felt endangered and irritated that they had paid to be battered, or felt powerless to express their compassion with the blacks in a mood of hostility. This play was meant to incite different reactions from different audience participants to educate the experience of history, and racism could not assist but power the audience’s experience of the play. These kinds of plays were used to polarize the audience along racial lines (Baraka 1968). Through the plays racism was discouraged in the United States through pre-active measures to prevent hostility among the citizens despite their race or origin. Once more, many white audience members were evidently shaken by the direct quarrel. This brought unity among the immigrants and the natives around the country and at a global level. The African American evolutions of theater presentations lead to the audiences have a freedom to choose to have control of their personal experience and choose where to focus during the performances. The spectators had the choice to decide what they want to focus on, either on the background themes such as light effects or to concentrate on the actor’s performance. This led the directors and stage actors develop mechanisms to compel l the performances so that the spectator s does not mix up their understanding. As the earlier directors took advantage of audience concentration they reduced the confrontation that dominated the previous performances in America (Hill, 2004). The open-air daytime performances in ancient Greece took place in a celebratory atmosphere in which social relations, drinking, and eating were all part of a daylong theatre occasion. Such events created an avenue for people from different races, cultures and tribes to interact, leading to exchange of cultural practices among them. This created a strong bond and a harmonious coexistence. In olden Rome, theatre was performed at religious celebration that presented a massive collection of entertainments. Both secular and sacred, arts were meant to

JOURNAL # 5 Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

JOURNAL # 5 - Research Paper Example Public transportation changed when the automobile became part of every family. Television shows replaced dinner conversations. We saw man walk on the moon and the horrors of war in our living rooms† (Bray par. 4). Various cultures have responded differently to technological advancements depending on their resources and capabilities to apply, adapt and create innovations based on these breakthroughs. For instance, as emphasized by Farahani, â€Å"culturally speaking, technology is neither evil nor disastrous; rather it is a means that, if used properly, could bring up the welfare of human beings. By deploying the laser technology we may help cure the eye of a child in a village. However, laser could be used to guide a bomb. We can use satellites for education and intellectual and cultural progress of human beings or we can use them as a means to spread the destructive cultural and ideological patterns† (1). Therefore, culture has learned to use technology to their advantage; with some isolated instances, some technological breakthroughs were used to serve selfish interests leading to destruction; not only of men, but of the environment. Culture during technological growth paralleled its rising pattern by exhibiting significant increases in population, to wit: â€Å"technology not only increased humans’ life span but how we live, how long we live, and how many there are of us† (Bray par. 2). With more technological breakthroughs, cultures have expanded knowledge, skills, and abilities that enabled the multiplicity of growths in all facets of life. One discovery paved the way for one too many and provided improved transportation and communication. No longer were cultures separate from each other, but technological discoveries and innovations have revolutionized closing the distance between time and space. Through the discovery of the internet, for example, people from diverse cultures have learned to

Identify Components of a Typical Contract Essay

Identify Components of a Typical Contract - Essay Example Parties must meet the legal capacity to enter into valid contracts (Miller & Jentz, 2012). This implies that parties must be of age, to understand stipulations of a contract and be of sound mind. It must be noted that minors of age below eighteen years cannot enter into a contract. Another requirement to be met by parties entering into contracts is that concerned parties must ensure that the contract is free from any form of future misunderstandings and has no loopholes. An offer must be made, and consideration be made for exchange. The purpose for which any contract is made must be for legal objectives. Lastly, parties meeting all the legal requirements seal the contract (Meiners, Ringleb & Edwards, 2012). The law also stipulates measures to be taken should any of the parties fail to honor terms of the agreement or perform breach of contract. The injured party could rescind the contract or set free the breaching party off any responsibilities coming because of the contract implement ation? The other option available is for the parties to reach an agreement on notation (Walston-Dunham, 2012). The injured side has a right to ask for compensation from the defaulter for damages or loss incurred. The injured party can file for a court order restraining the other party from undertaking any transaction direct related to the agreement. All rules relating to how contracts are formed and how every party is supposed to behave are contained in the law of contract (Walston-Dunham, 2012). Case 1 The two parties here are on contract, to sell ten acres of land. The seller, Krauses in the first instance offered a price less than the actual market value and a contract was formed both parties. The contract is legally binding in all terms and both parties are required to observe stated term. Krauses cannot make changes on the contract despite realizing the quoted price is much lower than the market price (Walston-Dunham, 2012). Changes can be implemented to the terms of the contra ct on exceptional cases such as when the contract ends (Meiners, Ringleb & Edwards, 2012). The contract could also be terminated if both parties reach a mutual agreement to end the contract and in other cases when both parties have fulfilled their obligation to each other leaving no other reason for the parties to carry out the contract (Walston-Dunham, 2012). If another situation arose and Krauses breaches the contract terms by indicating a price higher than agreed in writing, Jud is not liable to adhering to the stipulated terms as Krauses has performed breach of contract by false writing for his personal reasons (Miller & Jentz, 2012). As a result, Jud has right to terminate the contract as it does not act as per the laid down agreement (Walston-Dunham, 2012). Case 2 The second case implies a contract whereby there are two parties Gerald and a centre looking into the needs of disadvantaged children. The initial agreement was that Gerald who is an event organizer stages a concert to raise funds for the kids centre. However, Gerald thereafter decides not to hand over the concert earnings to the charity home as per the agreement. Both parties were well aware of the stipulations of the agreement and had the intention to abide by them (Meiners, Ringleb & Edwards, 2012). As earlier stated, for a contract to be valid it must fulfill all terms laid down by law. One of the stipulati

Human Factors Psychology - Essay Example The second is to find ways to work with management and employees as the changes occur within the work area. The concept of automation that can be used in the work space is one that can enhance the overall work load of those that are in the area. The airport will have the ability to change the work load that goes to cleaning different components and will have more efficiency that is related to the cleanliness of the airport. More important, there will be a reduction of stress for those that are overworked in the area and which don’t have the necessary time for cleaning specific areas. Since the airport is a larger area, this can provide more efficient results and can eliminate some of the stress that is associated with employees who are working in the area. However, the design engineering with humans is still one that has to monitor the automation for the specific scenario. The process that is used is not able to provide problem solving or work around difficult situations that may arise. The processing that comes for the machine will then need to be looked over by employees while ma naging the machine to automatically fulfill specific duties (Sandom, Harvey, 2004). The ability to use the automated machine to reduce work load and stress, while ensuring that the automated system is able to have problem solving capabilities by employees gives rise to the main advantages and disadvantages of automation. The technology that is used will help to reduce the amount of time and energy that each of the employees carry within the work space. As a result, there will be higher levels of efficiency that is in the work area as well as processes that are essential that are being fulfilled while other duties are being cared for. More important, the automated process for cleaning will lower the stress levels that are in the airport, specifically because workers can

The Odyssey by Homer Essay Example for Free

The Odyssey by Homer Essay In the morning, Nausicaa, daughter of King Alcinous and Queen Arete, goes with her friends to the river with the laundry and begins to wash and play games. Odysseus wakes up by their noise and, covered in salt and covering up his private parts with a leaf, travels to them. Nausicaas friends run away screaming but Nausicaa stays to listen to what the stranger has to say. Fearing that he may scare her if her were to grab her knees in supplication, Odysseus pleads with her at a distance. Nausicaa respects Odysseus and his fine words and thought and gets her friends to bathe him in the river and to clothe him. In the process, Athene divinely enhances his appearance so that he looks quite like a god. The fact that Nausicaa, without her maidservants and veil the two things that protect her person and reputation in public stays to talk to Odysseus shows her spirit and sturdiness of character. Fearing gossip, Nausicaa tells Odysseus, after inviting him to the palace to meet her parents, to wait in the grove. While there, Odysseus prays to Athene to aid him in his supplication to the king and queen. Book 6 contains an element, which although not scarce in the Odyssey, is certainly very rare in most epic poem: comedy. The comic element is unmistakeable in these scenes. Odysseus embarrassment when making his approach to the girls and right before bathing, as well as the girls terrified reactions to his nakedness, cannot help but elicit a lighter mood in the poems action, which until now had centered solely on the horrible problems faced by Odysseus and his family. Homer uses a simile to describe Odysseus as a lion (used in war situation in the Iliad which demonstrates, in this non-warfare situation that the girls viewed Odysseus as a dangerous and wild beast) and Nausicaa and the other girls as sheep. Here, the ravenous lion, buffeted by the elements but striving onward to state his all-consuming hunger on helpless sheep, is compared to the salt-covered Odysseus, ragged from days at sea, and filled with a hunger of an entirely different nature. The relation of the sheep to the girls can be seen clearly in retrospect when the girls flee before this ominous figure of male sexuality as sheep would flee before a hungry lion. This simile does not serve merely to make us once again pity the poor, travel-beaten Odysseus; it is rather an attempt to lighten the tension filling much of the first five books. BOOK 7 W HEN NAUSICAA AND HER FRIENDS HAD REACHED THE PALACE, Athene, disguised as a young girl, offers to lead Odysseus to the palace and places a magical mist around him rendering him invisible in order to evade rude questioning. Athene tell him that in order to speak to King Alcinous, he must first win favour with Queen Arete. When they reach the palace, Athene leaves and buggers off to Athens. Odysseus admires the fine palace then enters, sees Arete and grabs her knees in supplication. She allows him to see the king, who after removing one of his sons off of a chair so that Odysseus doesnt have to sit in the ash, feats with them and tells them the story of how he came to Phaeacia. The queen notices his Phaeacian clothes and Odysseus tells them about their daughters generosity. As they admire Odysseus and Nausicaa ha refused all other suitors, Alcinous hints at marriage but Odysseus stresses that he wants to go home. He is therefore promised their magic ships to sail home by. The ships can reach any destination and return in a day. Arete and the servants then prepare a bed for Odysseus and sleeps. In Book 7, we see the epitome of a motif that runs throughout the Odyssey: the relationship of host to guest. We saw the kind treatment Telemachus bestowed on Athene when was disguised as Mentes as well as the great hospitality extended to Telemachus by both Nestor and Menelaus. Now it is Odysseus himself who comes as a stranger to a foreign court and must act accordingly. Indeed, the role of a foreign visitor is one that Odysseus knows well, for he has wandered long and far and knows the customary courtesies expected by guests. Contrasted with his seasoned guest, Alcinous, although kind and benevolent as a host, is unused to receiving guests, and is initially unsure of how to react to Odysseus suit. After Odysseus has humbled himself by sitting in a heap of ashes, no one, including Alcinous, knows quite how to act. Finally, an elder named Echeneus, the oldest man of Phaeacia speaks. Echeneus tactfully reminds Alcinous of his duties as a host to a stranger. Once again, it is not Alcinous social grace and magnanimity that is lacking; it is his inexperience with situations of this sort that temporarily holds him back from action. We are also given insight into another motif of the poem: the nature of divine disguise. Alcinous suggests that Odysseus might be a god who has come to test the Phaeacians benevolence towards guests. We have already been told of the gods special love for the Phaeacians, and how the people of Phaeacia themselves are nearly divine. Now we lean that the gods manifest that love by appearing to them not disguised, but in their actual form. This gives us an indication of just how strongly Athene loves Odysseus, for she often converses with him in her pure, undistinguished form. But it is not until Odysseus once again reaches Ithaca that she will be able to do so without fear of Poseidons wrath. Homer, by mixing in some elements of magic (the forever ripe fruit and semi-divine Phaeacians) prepares the reader for the fantasy books. BOOK 17 T ELEMACHUS LEAVES EUMAEUS HUT AND GOES HOME AND IS WARMLY greeted by Eurycleia, maidservants and his mother, Penelope. He tells her to go and pray to the gods while he meets Theclymenus the seer and Peiraeus in the place of assembly. There he tells Peiraeus to hold onto his Spartan treasure until after the conflict with the suitors. Theoclymenus and Telemachus then return to the palace where Theoclymenus reveals a prophecy of Odysseus already being in the city to Penelope over dinner. Odysseus and Eumaeus then head off into the city and meet the traitorous Melanthius who both physically and verbally abuses Odysseus who manages who his peace while Eumaeus tells him off. Unshaken, the goatherd goes off into the palace. Then, as they approach the palace themselves, they see Odysseus old dog Argus is dying on top of dung. The dog wags his tail as he recognises his master after twenty years of separation and then dies. In the palace, Telemachus gives Odysseus a meal and then Athene commands Telemachus disguised father to beg from the suitors. Antinous, who was slightly provoked by Odysseus beggar, throws a footstool at him and Odysseus walks off bitterly and silently. The fact that Antinous did this, and was corrected and doomed by the other suitors, shows that he has no respect for Xenia. Penelope then decides that she wishes to speak to Odysseus as the beggar. Eumaeus, however, tries to dissuade her from this as she has heard so many false tales from men who have falsely claimed to have met Odysseus. Still, she wants to see him. But Odysseus only wants to see her after the suitors have left. She agrees and Eumaeus goes home but is asked by Telemachus to come back to the palace in the morning. Now that Odysseus has appeared before the larger Ithacan community in disguise, there is more room for the dramatic irony that fills many of the verses of The Odyssey. We see this notably during the Melanthius episode. Although Odysseus holds his peace after Melanthius attack, Eumaeus calls upon the gods to return Odysseus to his home so that he can punish the scornful goatherd. Melanthius, a loyal follower of the suitors, knows the power that will be his when Telemachus is eliminated. His own vow, of course, recoils back upon him. Melanthius wishes that Telemachus may suffer death as surely as Odysseus himself has already done so. The irony lies in the fact that Melanthius vow is fulfilled, only not in the way he had intended. Odysseus himself has not died, and is in fact standing right there. Therefore, as surely as Odysseus has not died, so too will Telemachus not die. Melanthius has unwittingly stated the truth. We see a similar use of irony later, after Antinous strikes Odysseus with the footstool. Only this time, no one specifically mentions the long-lost Odysseus. Instead the suitors remark that Antinous did badly to strike the beggar as he could have been a god testing the suitors kindness. Of course, we know Odysseus is not a god. But the gods have indeed disguised him fir the very reason that the suitors suggest: to test them and to see which are righteous and which are malevolent. It is also appropriate that Odysseus disguise makes others liken him once more to a god. Yet this time the situation is reversed. Before, Telemachus thought Odysseus a god for removing his disguise. Now, the suitors consider the possibility due to the lowly appearance of the disguise itself, not because of the majesty with which the gods envelop him when he stands revealed in his true form.

Introduction Speech Outline Essay Example for Free

Introduction Speech Outline Essay Purpose Statement: To persuade my audience that true personal power is developed through our humane treatment of ourselves and our fellow man. Thesis Statement: To understand personal power, it’s important to look at how we treat ourselves. Are we critical of ourselves? Unforgiving? Do we have low self-esteem or confidence? Attention Getter Overview of main points: â€Å"All suffering is caused by mankind’s great inhumanity to one another. Hello, I am Tonya, and today I am going to talk to you about accountability, responsibility, and change. ARC is the ark of a life that is built upon a stable foundation. I. First main point written in complete sentence When we think of being accountable, we often think of others accountability and not ourselves. Being accountability for our actions and not blaming others is the very first step to developing personal power. Accountability in this instance means being aware that something is wrong or amiss in our lives, and not ignoring it. It’s identifying the problem, or our wrong actions II. Second main point in complete sentence. Responsibility is the second step in the development of personal power, not only do we have to be accountable, we also have to accept responsibility for our thoughts, words, and the subsequent actions that take place as a result of them. Responsibility is accepting the problem or our negative actions and finding productive, efficient, and effective ways to deal with them. III. Third main point in complete sentence. Once we have identified the problem or wrong action, and accepted it, then we are ready for step number three†¦Change. Change. We are changing moment by moment each and every day. We are either changing for the best or for the worst. That’s not what we are speaking about here. When I say â€Å"change†, I am talking about a deliberate action, which will bring about a deliberate manifestation. True change comes about once we make a choice. Conclusion: Accountability, Responsibility, and Change these are the points on which a person can build their pyramid of personal power. If we are willing to be accountable, accept responsibility, and change when necessary, there is nothing that we cannot achieve; and we will be co-creators within the social structures of Life. We will always be a part of the solution, rather than being a part of the problem. Today, I challenge you to apply these three principles to your life and soon you will be living a life full of purpose, and fulfill your call to Greatness. Critical Self Assessment Reflective Essay Social Work Essay

Critical Self Assessment Reflective Essay Social Work Essay Self-assessment is always a challengeable task because people always attempt to conduct a self-assessment but they do not always succeed in this regard. The main reason for the failure of the self-assessment is the inadequate self-esteem or self-awareness. At the same time, it is necessary to conduct the self-assessment in order to define clearly the progress an individual has made in the course of his or her development and the identification of problems in the personal development along with goals of the further development. At any rate, while conducting my self-assessment, I focused on my current development both personal and professional, and, on the ground of this information, I attempted to define skills and areas which need consistent improvement and what I should work on. Initially, I supposed to conduct my self-assessment for myself. In fact, it was just interesting for me to know what a sort of person I am, how I assess and view myself and what I actually want to improve in my personality. However, on a profound reflection, I arrived to the idea that I need to share my self-assessment and I extended my target audience from myself to my peers and people interested in psychology because it is always interesting to get acquainted with oneà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s self-assessment to be able to avoid pitfalls of self-assessment made by others in the course of their self-assessment. Frankly speaking, I do not want to be didactic but still I just want to share my experience of self-assessment which may be useful to other people, especially my peers, who may have the same problems as I have. While conducting my self-assessment, I focused on my current personal and professional development mainly and, on the ground of my current development, I attempted to define what I really need to improve in myself and my development to become a better person. On analyzing my current development, I arrived to the conclusion that I have already reached positive outcomes in my personal and professional development. For instance, I have always been successful in my learning and my academic successes always encouraged me to carry on my professional development. At the same time, the more I learned the better I felt because I felt and still feel that my knowledge, my skills and abilities are very useful in my personal life. They contribute to my personal development, extend my eyesight and make me spiritually rich because my knowledge and experience are my personal wealth. At the same time, I would like to dwell upon skills and abilities I have already developed and which I consider to be very important in my life. For instance, my organizational skills are of the utmost importance for me but, as far as I remember, I always had problems with my organizational skills which stay a bit under-developed. At any rate, I cannot say that my regular life is well-organized. Naturally, I can do the routine actions I do day after day but sometimes I feel that I am running of time badly and I need more time to do everything I want and I have to do. I do not have a schedule of to dos for every day, although I attempt to plan my actions. For instance, when I have vacations I plan how I am going to spend my vacation and basically I fulfill my plans successfully. On the other hand, in my daily life, I face some problems with the organization of my working day because I can have an unexpected encounter with a friend of mine that may take a lot of time. As a result, I ma y fail to do something important I have planned at the beginning of the day. Furthermore, my organizational skills often into clashes with my leadership ambitions because, as I fail to organize effectively my own work or learning, for instance, than I cannot always organize a work of a group or team. As a result, my leadership ambitions cannot be implemented because people I want to lead are not confident in my ability to lead them. Nevertheless, I was always concerned with being the first, being the leader. In such a situation, I attempt to compensate my lack of organizational skills by my communication skills. I have a lot of friends and I do like the communication with interesting people. I have a few, if any, problems in the communication with any person. I can start communication easily and I make a lot of friends. In this regard, my high self-awareness and self-esteem may be factors which help me to communicate and lead people. frankly speaking, a feel being a bit too self-assured but this quality helps me a lot in my life, although sometimes it provokes conflicts with some people. On analyzing my current development, I focused on my target development. Taking into consideration the drawbacks I have identified in the course of self-assessment, I would like to focus on the improvement of organizational and leadership skills. In fact, I have to learn to organize and plan my daily life carefully because I believe this will help me to realize my full potential and to become a true leader. The latter is very important for me because I do need to be a leader, who guides people and help them to reach their goals, while working in a team. In this regard, the development of social relations may be very helpful. At any rate, I have good communication skills and I can develop social relations effectively but I believe that I need to change the direction in which I develop my social relations. What I mean is that, at the moment, I develop my social relations for pleasure, to make friends, to spend a good time, and so on. Now, I believe it is a high time to change my life a little bit. In actuality, I need to feel being useful to my community. In this regard, I would like to do some volunteer job to develop my organizational and leadership skills. In addition, I will learn how to be helpful and useful to other people. Thus, I believe that my self-assessment can be helpful to those people, who are interested in psychology and who attempt to conduct their own self-assessment. I attempted to be as sincere and critical as possible. I identified my drawbacks as well as positive traits of character. Naturally, I understand that I may be subjective but people, who read my self-assessment, can identify strong and weak points in my self-assessment and avoid those weak points in their own self-assessment.

Journey Motif Essay -- essays research papers

Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  In literature, the Journey is often a metaphor for discovery. The journey motif is used in Coleridge’s â€Å"The Rime of the Ancient Mariner.† It is also shown in Hawthorne’s â€Å"My Kinsman, Major Molineux† and â€Å"Young Goodman Brown.† In these stories, each main character changes sometime between the beginning and the end of the story. In addition, religion plays a part in each of these stories. Typically, in journey literature the hero encounters several obstacles that he or she must overcome. In Coleridge’s â€Å"The Rime of the Ancient Mariner,† the Mariner shows negativity. The Mariners moral vision is so impaired that his comparisons are persistently pessimistic. This pessimism is seen repeatedly in the similes that he uses. He describes life-in-death whose skin is â€Å"...

My Perspective on the Future of Education Essay -- essays papers

My Perspective on the Future of Education The future in education is very interesting as well as vital to me since I plan to be a teacher in the future. Many changes will be made before I enter the field of teaching. Most all of these changes will be positive and will help me to become a better teacher. The future of education will be changed completely with the help of new technology. Already education has changed thanks to technology. We now see computers in every class. In the future most classes will be totally taught through computers. New programs and software will be available that are interactive with the students as well as informative. Having classes through the internet will open up a large diversity of classes to choose since the whole world will have their classes available online. So students will be exposed to new areas of learning they may have once not had a chance to experience. However since the Web will be teaching the students what will the teachers do? Actually teachers will actually have the time to play the role they always pictured themselves...

The Three Little Users and the Big Bad Wolf Essay examples -- Creative

The Three Little Users and the Big Bad Wolf Once upon a time, there were three little computer users of three different professions and the time came for them to leave home and seek their fortunes. The first little user with the screen name LiLestPiggy, the youngest, bought his computer at the local chain computer store CompUSA, and had just recently installed a modem so he could surf the net. Email being the primary reason for the use of his computer, LiLestPiggy purchased a computer with the most basic set up. He was planning to surf the web and play games online, pursuing a job as an English teacher at the nearby elementary school. It was the most basic set up for a beginner. The second little user with the screen name LiLPiggy, the middle of the three, bought a laptop, installed Norton Anti-Virus, and installed a cable modem to insure a fast and safe internet connection. He was planning to pursue a business job so he needed a fast and safe computer. The third little user with the screen name of IllestPiggy, the eldest of three, built his own computer, installing several Anti-Virus programs and setting up a firewall and top-notch secret government security devices. A firewall protects your network from unwanted Internet traffic. The primary functions of a firewall are to let good traffic pass through while ‘bad’ traffic is blocked. The most important part of a firewall is its access control features that distinguish between good and bad traffic. One night, a hacker with the screen name BigBadWolf, who dearly loved to ruin little pigs lives, was out and about. The BigBadWolf instant messaged (IM’ed) LiLestPiggy who has the most basic internet connection. The BigBadWolf said, â€Å"Hello, I was wondering if ... ...estions brought up was whether the government should take action and patrol cyberspace for possible dangers. Some of the blame of the extensive abuse of the First Amendment can be pointed at the government. However, cyberspace is a place for people to act as they wish and speak freely, unless it would be breaking the first amendment of freedom of speech. If the government took action, there would most likely be conflict and it would be a big deal. In conclusion, hackers have tremendous power to cause trouble due to the unlimited resources and possibilities of the internet. Although they are capable of trouble, most hackers create viruses because of the purposes of it being challenging and entertaining. In this case, the government should step in and regulate cyberspace to a certain degree. We cannot let people commit crime and let them get away with it.

Comparing the Childhood and the Present Life

In the course of growing and becoming adult all people change their habits, points of view, interests and their appearances. But all people vary in different ways: some people deviate just in their appearance and don’t change their habits at all, but the others change absolutely all in themselves. Nevertheless there is one thing that we can’t change during all our life, this thing is our memory. Things that are learned early in life are the hardest to change or unlearn.Early conceptions of the world, even if lost to consciousness, remain a part of our memory and may influence our behaviors in some very interesting ways. For example when I was a child I attempted to explain and make sense of my world in terms of my experience. By the very nature of my limited number of years, my experience was not very wide or deep. My interpretations of the world, why things happened, were extremely limited and often very inaccurate. All things were divided by me into two groups: black and white or bad and good.I didn’t understand why my parents scolded me and why they forbade me different things that I wanted to do. And all what I had to do was discover the world around me. However when I became a teenager, things were starting to look more difficult. I left my toys behind and started looking for my own personality. I formed my main aims that I wanted to achieve in the future. And now I’ve turned 18, and I bet I could fill the entire paper with stories about what I used to be like, odd habits, that I dropped and so forth. Now I’m considered an adult. Of course I’ll continue to learn and experience new things, but the essence of my character won’t change. Hence, I should develop myself to become successful and outstanding person. Apart from the habits and the behavior I have changed outwardly. Earlier I had a round face with smooth and tan skin, with distinked eyes, with dimples, and without any wrinkles on my forehead. But now I can say that my face is more oval, and in general i’ve become well-build and broad-shouldered!!

In footing of the Australian pagan identity, Winton has again interpreted an of import and accept historic Australian inclination and regulate it to advance experienceings of familiarity and conversance amid the reviewers and the characters of Cloudstreet. The grass show of the Blackfella is that a nonher(prenominal) ensample of how the Australian heathen identity is envisioned through enquiry of inhering spiritualism. Consequently, the Blackfellas role in Cloudstreet is a remarkable office to the novels relevancy to the Australian ethnical identity. The Australian cultural identity is overly illustrated in Cloudstreet through the spiritual emblematic representation and avatar of the river, and its fellowship to the characters take care for the essence of heart. This is particularly evidentiary for expeditious dear, who, is spiritually tie in to the river in a number of ways. The river acts as a authority of peace, economic consumption and be for fast(a).
